Clean Eating Day 2—Grocery store finds!

Today was another successful day!

I’ll give you a quick rundown of my meals again.

Breakfast

  • 1 cup of cooked oatmeal
  • 1 Tbs. cashew butter
  • 1 sliced banana
  • 1 cup of skim milk

Morning

  • coffee with homemade creamer
  • Fage 0% with 1 tsp. of honey, 1 Tbs. chia seeds, and 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1 oz. cashews

Lunch

  • leftover ham and veggie soup
  • 2 clementines

Afternoon

  • 1/2 cup of cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup baby carrots
  • 1 box of raisins (no sugar added)
  • WW string cheese
  • coffee with skim milk

Supper

  • I made this: (served over lettuce with avocado, Fage 0% and salsa)

Omw- so delicious!

  • dessert: Fage 0% mixed with cocoa powder, honey, and vanilla. I made 2 servings yesterday and put one in the freezer—YUM!

After all of that food, I have points leftover for a snack tonight. The corn in my supper wasn’t clean because I used up a can of corn that I’ve had in the cupboard for far too long. We get fresh corn from hubby’s parents and we have a bunch in the freezer outside—and I wasn’t really up to running outside in my pajamas at 5 a.m. to get that…so canned it was!

Thoughts:

  • I struggled with an afternoon slump. I finally ended up going over to a fast food restaurant to buy coffee with skim. That seemed to help. But my body says, “I want sugar!!” I ignored it.
  • I am starving in the afternoons, hence all of my snacks. They’re all healthy snacks—but it shows how hungry I am!

Overall feeling today: Feeling healthy. I couldn’t help but notice how good I felt this morning. My body lost the “bloated” feeling and I just felt good. I hope it continues to get better!

And now for something different:

After work, I headed over to Target and HyVee for a little grocery shopping. I needed a few items for my Valentine’s Day dessert I’m going to make. I couldn’t find sucanat, but I found quite a few other things!

Bread without sugar! YIPPEE!!! It only cost a little over $3 too—which isn’t bad at all!

That is clean, am I right?

I went to the meat counter because I needed some lunch meat. I found a brand that is $4.99 for like 4 oz. or something and that seemed a bit extreme—but it’s basically just sliced meat—nothing added. It’s amazing how hard it is to find meat without all kinds of additives!

The guy at the meat counter came around and asked if he could help so I asked him if there were any meats without sugar. He said, “ummm…this one for sure because it’s all natural.” So I said I would take some of that…and look at the label:

Why yes, thanks for giving me meat with sugar in it when I specifically asked for meat without it. Oh well!

I also picked up little packets of xantham gum. They were 53 cents each, so I bought two for now. My co-worker gave me quite a bit too!

This is to be used for my homemade coffee creamer. I added some to my existing coffee creamer and it did thicken it up! I’ll be interested to see if it makes a difference in my coffee in the morning.

I plan on making another batch soon. This time I’m going to use almond milk.

21213 010

Sometimes I don’t understand the ingredients…but I’m told this is clean?

21213 011

I found some clean peanut butter!

21213 007

21213 006

I was a little confused on how to determine if an extract is clean—but I found this extract and it really fit the bill!

21213 008

21213 009

And I found some clean hummus—I need snack ideas!

21213 012

21213 013

And I have seen tapioca syrup in a bunch of recipes so I decided to splurge and buy it to have on hand.

21213 014

21213 015

And last but not least…a few other things! I went ahead and bought the big container of Fage 0% because I’ve really gone through it this week!

21213 016

I spent a little more than I probably needed to…but at least I’ll be prepared! lol This stuff will last me a long time.

One question came up—Is brown rice syrup clean? I found some products at the store with this in it so I Googled it quick and all I got were results about arsenic being found in brown rice syrup and brown rice! I quickly placed it back on the shelf! But I found an all natural mayonnaise type spread (with brown rice syrup) and I could use something like that!

This post has gotten a little long! Can you tell I’m excited about this clean eating thing? lol It’s opening up so many possibilities with new recipes and new foods—and that’s fun for a foodie like me!

  1. Wow, how crazy about the meat ingredients! LOL Maybe you can find an afternoon snack that has more protein in it. Think that would help? Once again, no clue about the clean eating stuff at this point. :/ I loved the long post. Keep 'em coming! :)

  2. wow that's awesome! I'm trying to figure out clean eating too. I think it's just eating things that are all natural- no preservatives? I can't believe deli meat has added sugar? That's insane!

  3. You're doing such a great job!!! Don't sweat the small stuff!! You're reading labels and making educated decisions based on your individual needs/budget/goals, etc....THAT'S WHAT'S IMPORTANT!!!!
Nearly all deli meat has added sugar. Look for the Applegate Brand, it's usually a safe bet. No nitrates/nitrites and usually no added sugar.
You've inspired me to finally write a blog post today. LOL I took pictures of all of my food and blogged it!! I'm so excited for you and this new adventure!

  8. The blue diamond Breeze almond milk is much better then the silk. Especially the vanilla! It's a treat! It's like having a vanilla shake. And the original tastes just like, well, milk! I'm still discovering products myself. The hard part is I'm finding some at every store, which means going to 3-4 stores each time I shop! My daughter gave me a good tip though - buy enough for two weeks - so you don't have to spend 3 hours a week shopping. I haven't hit target yet, but will this weekend. I get as much as I can find at Wal-Mart, they have quite a bit in organic! They carry a natural brand of peanut butter made by skippy. I also find stuff at Festival Foods, Pick n Save, Costco, and I understand Target. Costco has a lot of fruits and veggies in bulk, which is nice because it's enough for our family for two weeks. The other night I was so tired and we still had frozen pizza in the house so I made it (until now I've been cooking from scratch). I felt so sick all night. Proof that my body was immunue to the yucky stuff at one time - but no more! Keep up the good work!
