Clean Eating Day 1

I posted about how scared I was to get started this morning…but the day went very well!

I’ll do a quick run down of what I ate:

Breakfast

  • 1 cup of cooked oatmeal
  • 1 sliced banana
  • 1 Tbs. natural cashew butter
  • 1 cup of skim milk

Morning

  • Coffee with homemade creamer and Stevia
  • Fage 0% with 1 tsp. of honey, 1 Tbs. chia seeds, and 1/4 cup of pineapple
  • WW string cheese
  • 1/2 oz. almonds (I bought this at an Amish community—they are roasted in something but not sure what—a very light coating of something?)

Lunch

  • Leftover ham and veggie soup
  • 1/2 cup of fresh strawberries

Afternoon

  • 2 clementines
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup of baby carrots

Supper

  • egg white omelet with mozzarella cheese and turkey—topped with homemade salsa
  • kale chips
  • A BIG HUGE GLASS of water with fresh lime juice
  • dessert: Fage 0% mixed with cocoa powder, honey, and vanilla.

After all of this eating, I have 6 points + left over for the day.

Planned evening snack:

  • homemade hot cocoa made with water and stevia—this is 0 points +!
  • popcorn—natural and plain.

I also drank A TON of water throughout the day. No pop for me. It’s banned completely for now.

Thoughts:

  • I ate a whole lotta dairy today! It just kind of happened that way…but I suppose I should watch that? Is there any danger to eating too much dairy?
  • I found myself thinking about sweets a lot throughout the day. But I was fine. Addicted a bit?
  • The dessert that I made and the hot cocoa are not as sweet as most packaged products are. This will take some getting used to—but they don’t taste bad either!
  • My coffee creamer is a bit weak. My co-worker is gluten intolerant and has a stash of xantham gum—she’s going to give me some to add to my creamer and see what that does.

Overall feeling today: Excited!

I am really excited about this. It doesn’t feel like a diet at all, yet I am not eating the foods that aren’t good for me. What I love about today is that everything I am eating is GUILT FREE. This is huge for me. I have a lot of guilt centered around food.

Of note:

  • I need to cook up some whole grains to have on hand! I missed bread today and I think I could satisfy those cravings with whole grains.
  • I thought I would have to go without a sweet treat on Valentine’s Day—But Staci reminded me that there are options! I’ve picked out a clean dessert recipe to enjoy with hubby…who will be home on Valentine’s Day! Thanks Staci!

Questions that arose that I need to research:

  1. How is honey or stevia different than sugar? I know it’s less processed, but how does it affect the body differently?
  2. Are there health benefits to unsweetened cocoa powder?

That’s day one!

I also want to invite you to check out Jessica’s blog for this 68 day challenge. She is the one who asked me to do to this challenge. Head on over there to cheer her on too! I might do some posting there once in a while too.

  1. You're doing great!!

I'm sorry I don't have any answers to your questions about sugar, etc.

  2. Atkins isn't inherently bad. There are other lower carb plans thata re healthier, but overall Atkins isn't a horrible plan. I just wanted to clear that up :-)
Have you dne any research on evolutionary eating. Aka the Paleo Diet? It's very similar to what your doing now, but eliminates all grains and increases the fat - DON'T BE AFRAID IF FAT!! I notice there was very little fat in your diet today. You're going to need to increase it to stay satisfied and full. Grassfed butter, full fat dairy from grassfed cows, nuts, but butters, coconut chips, etc.....all great sources of good fats that won't kill you :-)
Good luck with this!! I've been eating clean for about a year now and I've never felt better!!

    3. I knew I had that coming about the Atkins diet. Lol my kale chips were baked with olive oil...it you are right...very little fat! Research, research, research.... The popular myth that fat is bad is going to be a hard one to let go of!

Blogger needs a like button for comments like Staci's. haha... I have been reading blogs on my iPad now too...stupid auto correct! It is frustrating!

  3. Looks like you had a really good day! I notice a lot of times that "clean eaters" have breakfast for supper. Is this because it's hard to figure out typical supper items? Well I'm glad I could be of some kind of help. I am very interested in clean eating, but I'm just not to that point yet. I know I mentioned chronicles of a curvy housewife. It has been interesting to see all the things she has discovered recently. I know she does a lot of the grass fed butters and things that the above commenter mentioned. How cool that your coworker had the xantham gum! Lol

  4. I agree about good fats! Olive oil and avocados are good sources as well.

I don't know if it's "dangerous" to have a lot of dairy but it's something I run into as a lacto-ovo vegetarian. An easy solution is to reduce but not eliminate cheese. For example, instead of cheese in an omelet you could have turkey + peppers/onions/any veggie you like sauteed in olive oil. I also rarely put cheese on veggie burgers or sandwiches anymore -just some hummus or mashed up avocado. Just some suggestions - you're off to a great start!

  7. Congrats on day 1! To me the only difference between stevia and honey is that stevia has no calories. I also tend to go dairy-heavy when I cut out sugar...not sure why. ALSO - I made a similar version of hot chocolate except with almond milk instead of water. It was delicious!

  8. My sister makes these really easy clean cookies with banana and oatmeal. She loves 'em...me not so much but it's worth a try to get your sweet fix cleanly. Congrats on day 1.
